Your pastor battles more than what you could ever imagine. Your pastor’s prayers, sermons, and guidance are what stands between you and the devil.

Being the shepherd over your soul, God gives your pastor a different level of wisdom and with that comes a new level of attacks. Knowing how to pray for your pastor is so important.

pray for your pastor

With 4 am phone calls, meetings, hospital visits, elderly visits, dealing with prickly people, prayer meetings, district meetings, birthday parties, weddings, funerals, sermons (at least 3 times a week), and the multitude of pastoral duties unseen and unheard I would dare say that your pastor has a full load. This is not including engaging in his own personal life with family and jobs.

It is very important to find ways to pray for your pastor and his family daily so that he can focus on leading his congregation with a right and clear mind.

Here are 3 Powerful Ways To Pray For Your Pastor

Prayer To Cover Your Pastor

Let’s be honest, your pastor is human and he or she is going to face some of the same things that you face. A pastor’s family usually lives in a glass house for all to see.

With that being said, it is all the more reason to cover your pastor in prayer. Pastors are going to get weak and weary, they will at times lose their focus by being pulled in a million directions, they will most definitely be attacked by the devil spiritually and physically.

I have seen my own pastor and pastor’s wife have to deal with attacks that would only come from the devil himself to distract and discourage. This is when your prayers are most needed and most felt. I can assure you, your pastor and pastor’s spouse can feel the effects of a praying church!

These are 5 specific prayers that you can focus on while praying for your pastor:

  • Courage and Strength
  • Renewed Passion
  • Clear Direction
  • Against Physical Attacks
  • Against Spiritual Attacks

Scriptural Prayers For Your Pastor

Praying scriptures over your pastor is powerful. You are speaking the Word of God, and God is bound by His Word. Read that again.

When you pray scriptures over your pastor’s life it is binding in faith what God has already spoken.

The Bible says that there is power of life and death in the tongue. So speak life over your pastor so that he may be able to flourish in the ministry that God has called him to.

  • Wisdom to Lead the Church

Ecclesiastes 2:26 (CSB) “For to the person who is pleasing in his sight, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy…”

  • Healthy Body

3 John 1:2 (CSB) “Dear friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and are in good health, just as your whole life is going well.”

  • Healthy and Strong Marriage

Ephesians 4:2-3 (CSB) “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

  • Guidance From God

Psalm 25:4-5 (CSB) “Make your ways known to me, Lord; teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; I wait for you all day long.”

Pray For Your Pastor Before He Preaches

When your pastor steps up to the pulpit every service, your pastor is stepping onto the battlefield.

There will be people sitting in his congregation who are dealing with mental, physical, or emotional issues and he is about to bring The Word into their lives to give them hope.

When your pastor steps to the pulpit he or she has one goal in mind…to reach that ONE person.

They want to reach the person who feels like giving up. They want to give the message of hope.

They want to reach the person who feels they are in bondage and will never change. They want to give the message of redemption.

There will be times when the atmosphere is right and the message is received with an open heart, open mind, and open arms.

But there may be times when there are distractions and hardened hearts and the words of your pastor fall on stony ground.

This is why it’s important to pray for your pastor while your pastor is preaching! Pray for him or her while the words go forth so that it may touch the depth of even the saddest soul.

Your pastor will most likely come against thoughts, attacks, glares and scowls when he/she steps up but with your prayers covering, your pastor will be able to deliver the sermon just as God has given it to him.

However you choose to use these 3 powerful ways to pray for your pastor just know that you are doing a work in the Kingdom of God.

You are needed.

Your prayers matter.

Let’s determine to rise together in the Kingdom of God to pray for our pastor’s world-wide.

  1. Thanks for this awesome reminder! This is something alot of us forget to do because by nature we could be self centred. I particularly like the point of praying for your pastor before preaching a sermon! 👏
