Being a mom is amazing, scary, fulfilling, life changing, wonderful, stressful, and a ton of other adjectives I can throw in here.

This is why prayers for your children are so important!

“Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. ” Psalm 127:3-5

prayers for children

As mom’s we always want to do our very best in taking care of our kids. Of course we are going to provide the basics of a place to live, clothes and food.

But the MOST important thing we can do as a mom is to pray for our children! I cannot stress this enough!

“God has chosen intercession as the primary means in which He releases His power now and forever.” Crosswalk.com

Of course we need to be praying for our husbands, but God has also given us the blessing of our children and our biggest responsibility is to pray for our children and instruct them in the ways of the Lord.

How do you know what to pray for your children? There are so many things we need to cover in prayer and we need a starting place.

I think these are the top 5 essential prayers we need to be praying for our children.

A mom’s prayers are very powerful because God has given you this child or children to be in charge of.

Prayers for your children’s salvation

The absolute most important thing we can do for our children is to lead them to the Lord and make sure they are saved.

We know that our husbands are supposed to be the head of the home and this includes being the spiritual head of the home but that is not always the case.

As moms this responsibility often falls to us so we must be diligent in teaching our children about God and how to be saved.

Proverbs 22:6 tells us “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

Of everything we do for our children we must teach them the importance of trusting God with their lives and souls.

Have you heard of the “Roman Road to Salvation”?

  1. Because of our sin, we separated from God. Romans 3:23
  2. The penalty for our sin is death. Romans 6:23
  3. The penalty for our sin was paid by Jesus Christ! Romans 5:8
  4. If we repent of our sin, then confess and trust Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we will be saved from our sins! Romans 10:13 and Romans 10:10

Prayers for your children to seek God’s will for their lives

Despite their age God does have a plan for their lives.

As young children they need to be learning about God’s love for them. They need to be taught to pray and praise God for all He does for them.

We know that these lessons lay the foundation that will help them when they grow older and as they do grow in their faith these lessons will be more meaningful.

The enemy is scheming and making plans to attack our precious children and we need to have plan not only to be on defense but to go on the offense as well.

This is such a critical time to be praying for your children. They will be meeting new people, making new friends and the dreaded boyfriend and girlfriend relationships will be starting. Ugh!

We must pray for their future

Even if your children are little or teenagers we need to be praying for their future. We want them to be seeking God’s will for their lives in their choice of schools, careers and activities.

Too many times we leave it up to the schools to guide our kids in what direction they should go as far as a career path or college.

Momma’s we need to be praying about this now. We know that when we are seeking God’s will for our lives and following His divine leadership and direction then our lives will be so much happier and more fulfilling.

Remember when Bible talks about planting seeds? And I’m sure you have prayed that God will open doors about certain things in your life, maybe for a new job or finances.

We need to be praying that God will do the same for our children’s futures. We want God to move in ways that only He can to position our children for their very best lives.

I believe that when we are teaching our kids about God from an early age we are planting seeds. We are planting seeds of faith in our children. Our prayers for their lives are like water for those seeds.

Prayers for your children to have Godly friends

We were not meant to be alone. Remember the story of Adam and Eve? God created Adam and saw that it was not good from him to be alone so He created Eve.

Friendships are very important. How many friends do you have? Good, trustworthy friends who are open and honest with you. Friends who encourage you and hold you accountable.

Our children need this as well. They need true Christian friends who will encourage and support them in their walk with Christ.

They need friends who will hold them accountable and be there for them when they are going through struggles.

Our children will be faced with temptations and have people who will try to lead them astray. They will need friends who will pray for them. Friends they can trust.

During the teenage years the enemy will be trying hard to derail all the foundation work you have done. Remember your teenage years?

Be praying for God’s supernatural protection and guidance. Be praying against evil spirits who will be trying to attack our kids. Pray for our kids to fall back on the lessons we have been teaching them.

This is also the time that satan will be working overtime to lead them astray. We must pray that they will use the Armor of God to be on guard and defeat the attacks of the enemy.

This is a time when their emotions and hormones are going crazy so it will be easy for them to fall prey to depression and anxiety and with the growth of social medial as parents we must kick our prayer time into overdrive!

Prayers for your children’s relationships with family

Pray that they will have a heart of forgiveness

Have you ever noticed that your family can and sometimes will hurt you more than any other person you know?

Of course it is because we love them, we trust them, and we depend on them to always be there for us and have our best interest at heart.

At least that is the way it should be. The family unit is one of the main ways the enemy seeks to destroy our lives and our witness. He knows if he can destroy the family he can cause all kinds of havoc in our lives.

The Bible is very clear about how we should forgive others and the consequences when we do not.

“For it you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:15

As much as our family can and does hurt us at times we much forgive them. I’ve had it happen in my own family. Having family at odds causes so much pain and not just for the two or three who are odds but for the entire family.

Feeling loved and wanted

How sad that so many children have to raise themselves and do not feel loved or wanted by their parents. It is heartbreaking!

My daughter actually had a child in her class commit suicide because of this.

Being a mom can be all kinds of stressful! Honestly at times we may not like our kids, mostly as teenagers, but we always love them and they need to know that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Because of sin, this world is broken. There are so many people dealing with the scars of their own childhood that once they become parents it is hard for them to show love in a way that their child understands.

Take time each day to look your children in the eye and tell them you love them. Not because of how smart they are or how good they are in sports but because you prayed for them and they are a blessing from God!

Make sure you hug your children every single day and if they are grown and no longer living at home hug them every time you see them. Three of my children are grown and living on their own but they know when they see me I’m getting a hug.

Sometimes the boys protest but they love it. You can tell. They will come over to me with their arm out while saying “You know I’m grown, you don’t have to hug me every time you see me.” lol

When your children know in their heart of hearts that you love them unconditionally then your relationship with that child will be so much stronger!

They will feel free to be honest with you and talk to you about their struggles, hopes and dreams. Even if I don’t see all of my kids every day I still talk to them everyday.

It may just be a text or sending something funny. But when life gets hard we have those heart to heart talks and they know I am always here for them and praying for them.

A mother’s love for her children is a great example of God’s love for us. Nothing can make us stop loving our children even when we don’t like the decisions they make we still love them.

Prayers for your children’s purity

Purity of mind, body and heart. There are so many ways the enemy will try to tempt our children and corrupt them.

We know it will happen because it happened to us. It still happens to us. We are tempted all the time.

This is a perfect example of a reason for intercessory prayer and our children are the perfect people to be praying for!

A warning to parents and others who have influence over our children

As much as we love our children and want what is best for them we know others have influence over them as well. Jesus said it himself, “If anyone causes one of thee little ones – those who believe in me – to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”
