August 18 Prayer Reflection

I was filled with anxiety, and so stressed due to my work. I was able to get my work done and take care of myself and others. I was overwhelmed by all the work that needed to be done. But why was my mind so occupied with worry?

My mind was set on the flesh. And when we do that, our mind is not at peace.

In Romans 8, Paul tells us that for those in Christ, we have the Spirit, and He has set us free from the law of sin and death. Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, we walk according to the Spirit, not the flesh. To combat this, we must focus on the Spirit instead of the flesh.

In Greek, phroneo for ‘to set our minds’ means to direct one’s mind to a thing. In this case, we must direct our minds to the Spirit instead of the flesh.

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6 ESV

This verse reminds me that I must breathe out flesh and death and breathe in the Spirit of life and peace. I have this verse in a frame near my desk in my home office. And I pray it often when I experience anxiety or worry.

When my anxiety was high that day, I texted a friend and asked her to pray. She replied that she would and then put “Romans 8:6” in the text. I laughed to myself as I knew exactly what she meant. She was kind and gracious, reminding me to pray and breathe this verse.

The next time anxiety or worry is plaguing you, set your mind on the Holy Spirit. Breathe in the Spirit that gives us life and peace, and breathe out the flesh and death. Then God’s Holy Spirit will fill you up, and you can be at peace as you continue your day!
