Prayer Reflections for May 12
My sixteen-year addiction to pornography left me feeling ashamed and broken. I was empty on the inside despite having prayed the magical words at eight years old to invite Jesus into my heart.
Really, all I wanted was a free ticket to heaven.
I grew up in churches that scared the literal Hell out of you and the only reason I wanted this Jesus was so I wouldn’t burn for eternity. I saw God as this distant figure in the sky pointing His finger down at me with a bunch of dos and don’ts. My works-based religion was completely dependent on my own checklist of actions. Read the Bible, pray, go to church. So long as I was doing these things, I was in His favor, right?
It wasn’t until I was married with two kids at twenty-eight years old at the darkest moment of my life that I had a true encounter with Jesus. I had tried to repent from my habitual sin and made more promises to God than I can count. I had reached the point of thinking God didn’t want me anymore after all the empty promises.
I had condemned myself.
Any further judgment or condemnation would have only left me feeling emptier and more lost. I finally reached a breaking point and turned on the television in my bedroom to TBN, a religious broadcasting network. Joseph Prince was the preacher and as soon as I tuned in, he began to read a letter from a man who had overcome his addiction to pornography.
The one line that changed my life was: “Stop focusing on not sinning, but instead focus on the finished work of Christ.”
It was at this moment, His light shone directly on my sin, exposing it for the death it was. Just as He clothed Adam and Eve, He covered me in His blood and righteousness, cleansing me.
He didn’t justify or condone my sin but brought me out of the pit and redeemed me. I saw the loving eyes of a Savior as I felt the true weight of my sin come crashing down on me. His kindness, patience, and love for me are what allowed me to repent and change. He is a loving Father who hates to see His children suffer. He knows and longs for what is best for us and that is a good God!
May 12 Prayer
Dear Jesus,
I thank You that You accepted me as I was in my darkest, most shameful moment. I also thank You for not leaving me that way. You picked me up and set my feet on solid ground. You took me by the hand, cleansed me in Your blood and showed me the right way to live. I pray You will continue to renew my mind and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Thank You for Your kindness and goodness that leads me to a life of peace and authenticity. It is in Your Holy name I pray, Amen.
