God’s vision of the sun is for it to shine and God’s vision for you is also to shine. God desires for you to reflect His love and shine your light as you walk through every area of your life and in every season.
God’s vision for your life has multiple facets. God has a plan for your present and future. He desires for you to walk in His will in your spiritual life and in all you do in your daily life.
And in addition to His purposes for you as a believer, God has a specific unique calling that He specially equipped you for from the moment you were created. And no matter what season of life you’re in, “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 NIV)

The 2 Focus Areas of God’s Vision for You
When God made you, He had a vision for who He intended you to be as a person, as well as what His will would be for your life. There are 2 main focus areas in which God has desires and plans for you.
God’s Vision is for Your Heart
Everything you do springs from who you are as a person, which is anchored in your heart. The state of your heart shapes your mindset, attitudes, and your character that shows up in the world.
Your heart determines how well you shine your light and bring glory to God in all you do. And He desires that “your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best…to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9 NIV)
“God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 5:5 NIV) So we must nurture the love God pours into our hearts so it grows within us and overflows to others. God’s vision for your heart is for you to…
- Love God – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” ~Mark 12:30 NIV
- Love others – “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” ~Romans 12:10 NIV
- Love yourself – “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” ~Psalm 139:13-14 NIV
You may wonder why “love yourself” is part of the vision God has for you. This does not mean a self-centered love. It’s about knowing your worth as God’s creation.
If you don’t believe that God made you perfectly and that He has special purpose for you, then you will not walk in the fullness of His joy and peace. And you may not have the confidence to step out or continue moving forward in all that He created you for.
Knowing and embracing your identity in Christ, as well as your unique traits inside and out, is critical to your ability to effectively walk in God’s vision for your life.
You don’t have to compare yourself to anyone else or the world’s standards. You are loved and equipped for a special purpose just as you are.
The more you grow in your love for God and trust in the truth of His Word, the more you will see yourself as God sees you. And this will bring your heart to also see others more as God does, thus loving them more as He does as well.
May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else. ~1 Thessalonians 3:12 NIV
God’s Vision is for Your Life
…live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work… ~Colossians 1:10 NIV
God’s vision for your life is for you to bring Him glory in…
- Your character – Who you are affects all aspects of your life. So it’s critical to focus on intentional growth spiritually and personally to align with the heart of God, the mind of Christ, and the leading of the Spirit. Transforming into the person you were meant to be enables you to live a life that is pleasing to God. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.” ~Romans 12:2 NIV
- Your daily life – What you do in every area of your life matters to God. Your spiritual life, health and wellness, relationships, work inside or outside of the home, financial stewardship, mindset and personal growth, rest and leisure, and all parts of your daily life affect your ability to love God, love others, and be productive in what will move you forward in God’s plan for your life.“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” ~Colossians 3:17 NIV
- Your unique calling – The impact you make in God’s Kingdom and in the world springs forth from your unique design and God’s specific purposes for you. The reasons why you do what you do should be based in God’s love and His call on your life, and not just stem from the desires of your flesh, the influence of others, or the pull of the world. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” ~Ephesians 2:10 NIV

Voices that Hinder God’s Vision for Your Life
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. ~Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
There are many voices competing for your attention and focus both within and around you. These influences and temptations can shift your beliefs about God and yourself, in addition to distorting your view of your life’s vision.
Some of the influences that hinder your path forward include the voices of…
- Self-defeating thoughts – You might have negative thoughts about who you are, what you’re capable of doing, and even about God’s love and acceptance of you. This can cause you to lack confidence in God and in own your abilities, procrastinating or not moving forward at all. So you must be proactive to recognize these voices as being opposed to the truth of God’s word, and use spiritual and practical strategies to “…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5b NIV)
- Past experiences – You may believe that because you’ve struggled with progress in the past, you won’t be able to succeed now or in the future. This can cause you to avoid working on certain things God may be asking you to do. But when you discern and follow God’s plan and timing, and move forward in His strength, you will be able to do what He is calling you to do…”for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:13 NIV)
- Other people and the world – Input from other people and learning from the world can be of value, but can also lead you away from the path that God actually intended for you. This can cause you to chase after the wrong things or discourage you from what’s actually in your heart. So putting what you know God is revealing to you ahead of all other influences is critical to having peace in following God’s vision for your life. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” ~John 14:27 NIV
4 Ways to Walk More Fully in God’s Vision for Your Life
From the moment you first put your faith in the Lord, you’ve been on a journey to walk more and more in God’s vision for your life. And as you move forward, whether at the start or farther along in your path, it’s easy to get off track.
Sometimes you are aware of that and make an effort to adjust. Other times you might not know how to course correct. And at times you may not even realize you’ve moved away from God’s best for you.
Not having clarity of some parts of God’s vision for your life, or feeling uncertain of how to walk fully in that vision if you do know it, can cause confusion, discouragement, and other undesired emotions and outcomes–even to the point of giving up altogether.
However, if you happen to shift from the path intended for you or even lose your way altogether, God keeps His eyes on you and all you have to do is look back up to Him for the strength and direction to get back on track.
Here are 4 ways you can WALK more fully in God’s vision for your life in every season:
Welcome God into all areas of your life
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ~Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
If you keep any part of your life isolated from God’s love, truth and power, it will hinder your overall ability to effectively follow the path God planned for you. Relationships, health and wellness, work and finances, and other aspects of your life just left to chance can distract your heart and mind, causing you to lose peace or stumble as you try to move forward.
So take a regular spiritual and practical inventory of every aspect of your life to see if you are walking in God’s will, experiencing His freedom, and producing godly fruit. If there is an area that is not aligned with what God would want for you, surrender it to God, submit your needs to Him in prayer, search His word for truth related to your challenges and desires, and seek support as needed so you can progress in peace.
Abide in Christ to bear fruit
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” ~John 15:5 NIV
Your ability to produce much lasting fruit in your life is directly related to staying deeply connected to the words, love, and joy you receive in Christ. As you walk through your day, spiritually sit at the feet of Jesus to learn from His words, soak up the fullness of His love, share in the joy of the Lord. This will enable you to receive the wisdom and power you need to carry out God’s will in the small and big things in your daily life and unique calling.
Let God transform your character
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. ~Psalm 139:23-24 NIV
Everything you do in every part of your life is shaped by who you are inside as a person. So you must prayerfully identify where you need to transform more to reflect the heart of God, develop the mind of Christ, and sense the leading of the Spirit. Being proactive to become the person God desires you to be will equip and empower you to step into his best for you.
Keep pursuing God’s purposes for your life
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. ~Proverbs 19:21 NIV
You were not made to merely go through the motions of life. You were made with purpose as a believer, in your daily life and as a unique calling. To fully become the person God intended you to be and fulfill the special tasks He’s calling you to do, you must be intentional to seek increasing clarity of what His purposes are for you.
Seek Him in prayer, explore your unique design, and step out into the opportunities God provides to serve that fit your season of life. Walk with God on a lifelong journey of spiritual and personal discovery and impact.
Prayer for God’s Vision for Your Life
As you walk more fully in God’s vision in all parts of your life, you’ll experience more peace and joy in your everyday life. And you’ll also live with more passion, confidence and impact as you pursue your unique calling to make an impact for God’s glory.
…We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work… ~Colossians 1:9b-10a NIV
