Prayer Reflections for July

I would love to write a flowery devotion about today’s verse, but the truth is, I can’t.

When I read today’s verse, I picture a deer panting for streams of water. I see it crossing fields, climbing hills, all to get to a precious drink that will quench his thirst. Then taking his fill and walking away completely satisfied…

That’s the picture Psalm 42 paints. A deer longing for a drink of water.

Only I relate more to a deer that’s surrounded by water.

To keep with the metaphor, I can get a drink of Jesus whenever I want… so too often I don’t long for anything. I don’t drink my fill; I take a taste and walk away.

Have you ever found yourself there?

Instead of turning to Jesus to satisfy your soul, you kind of take Him for granted?

Our Bibles are never more than one room away. Christian music and podcasts are at our fingertips. Prayer is always a possibility… So, what’s there to long for? All of our spiritual needs are covered. That’s where I’m finding myself. If you’ve ever found yourself where I am today, I want you to know you’re not alone.

We live in a day and age where it’s easy to cultivate a Christian lifestyle and still miss Jesus.

We can wear the shirts, like the verse, and type “amen” all without stopping to really engage our hearts or minds. It’s easy to be a surface Christian without longing to have a heart to heart with Jesus.

I know, because that describes me to a T. I’d love to say it’s just today, but it’s more of a season I’m going through. But knowing is half the battle. If you find yourself where I am, I hope you’ll join me in prayer today.

July 1 Prayer

Father God, help me to long for You the way that deer pant for water. Help me to thirst for You, even when You are within arm’s reach. Remind me that You are near, and there is nothing better for me than to be in Your presence. And that nothing is as good for my soul as You. Amen.
