Bible verse for June 1
I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
Genesis 9:13-16, NIV
Prayer Reflections for June 1
Each time I see a rainbow it reminds me of this story in Genesis 9. Recently it has expanded to the story of Jesus in the storm because of the similar response from God. In Mark 4:35-41 Jesus and the disciples were in a boat going to the other side of the sea.
I’d like to note that the disciples were very familiar with boats since they were fishermen.
While they were traveling across the sea, a storm was raging– Jesus was peacefully asleep while the disciples most likely felt that they were in major trouble. Now, time for the similarity with Genesis 9: God was not concerned with the fierce flood waters just as Jesus was not disturbed by the raging seas. He stopped the flood and the storm because of His love for His children.
The rainbow acts as a reminder of the love and grace God has for us. What is even more amazing about the rainbow is the fact that it wasn’t a reminder for us but to God Himself.
- I love the fact that Jesus slept through the storm and it wasn’t until recently that I realized what woke Him up. How does it feel knowing that Jesus is listening for your voice?
- God’s grace protects us from the consequences of sin and death. The rainbow acts as a reminder to God that He will never again destroy the earth with a flood (even when we forget or don’t understand the meaning of His rainbow). What aspect of God’s character and His grace stands out in Genesis 9:13-16?
June 1 Prayer
Lord, even when the storms rage around me I know You are there. Thank you for staying true to Your promises and just in Your ways. I want to know You better and have a grace towards those around me that resembles the grace You so lovingly share with me. Thank you for not giving up on me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
