Bible verse for June 5

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 ESV

Prayer Reflections for June 5

When I was a new Christian, I was part of a weekly women’s Bible study. I remember when we were studying Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount. When we got to Matthew 5:43-45, the leader asked us to think of someone we would consider our enemy. A person’s face quickly came to mind, along with an eye roll just thinking about them.

Then we started talking about what it meant to pray for them.  To my disappointment,  it didn’t include “God, please zap them!” (Don’t tell me you haven’t thought of those types of prayers before!) I remember turning to one of my friends at the table with a great idea. “I’ll make you a deal. I’ll pray for your enemy if you pray for mine.” Gratefully, she didn’t take me up on my offer.

As I began to reflect on our study, I was torn. I wanted to pray for my enemy because that is what Jesus asked me to do. But I didn’t want to because, well, let’s be honest, I didn’t like them. They had hurt me deeply. As I sat with this conundrum, I began to feel my heart soften. Instead of praying for their demise, I began to pray for God to bless them. I know that was only by the grace of God!

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 ESV

The Bible tells us Jesus was full of grace and truth. The truth is the guidance and wisdom of how to be a Child of God. Jesus taught us to practice things like forgiveness, patience, giving, compassion, and praying for our enemy. Then He upped the ante by saying anyone who is even angry with their brother or sister is subject to judgment. (Matthew 5:22) Living out the truth that Jesus taught is hard!

Which is why it is such a blessing that Jesus also came with grace.

grace : [grās]  noun
the free and unmerited favor [act of kindness beyond what is due or usual] of God for their regeneration or sanctification.

It was only through God’s grace I was able to pray for my enemy. While I was asking God to take out this person whom He loved, He gave a kindness to me that I didn’t deserve. He extended grace because He knew it was through those prayers that my heart would receive healing. Through interceding for my enemy, I would begin to look more like Jesus.

It is so reassuring that God won’t ask us to do anything He isn’t willing and able to help us complete…a combination of grace and truth.

In your time with The Lord, ask Him to reveal what part of His truth you having a hard time with. Then ask Jesus for the grace to walk out that truth.

June 5 Prayer

Lord, Please reveal to me what part of Your truth I am having a hard time with. Please allow me the grace to walk out fully in that truth, Amen.
