Prayer Reflections for June 6

Sand Burrs are a pain, literally.

Some people call them “stick tights”. When you walk through a park infested with these nasty plants you get painful stickers in your socks and on your pant legs. UGH!

Because I live on a small farm I often have to deal with sand burrs. You see you don’t want them growing in a hay field. Poor animals would hurt their mouths eating hay mixed with stickers.

I used to complain about pulling these plants but knew I had to because they multiply faster than rabbits.

Today as I found bunches of unwanted sand burrs my attitude was different. You see, God has blessed me with “grace upon grace.”

You might be thinking, “What? Sand burrs seem like part of the curse.”

That is correct, so let me explain.

As humans who sin, we don’t deserve anything except punishment. Grace is receiving something we don’t deserve. So it is essentially a gift.

John 1:16 says, “From his abundance, we have all received one gracious blessing after another.” (John 1:16 NLT)

So do I suddenly love sand burrs? No, on the contrary.

But God can always teach us important lessons from the very things that He and we hate.

Today my immediate reaction was to thank Him for His many demonstrations of grace.

  • Health, strength, and agility to be able to pull weeds
  • Leather gloves to protect my hands from the pain of stickers
  • Last night’s rain made the ground soft and easy to pull weeds from.
  • A few clouds and a breeze made our hot presummer weather cooler.

In the process of pulling sand burrs, the Lord also taught me some lessons.

First, sin is much like stickers. They look harmless but even one can create pain.

Furthermore, if not dealt with in the early stages, sin will multiply into something much bigger than we ever imagined.

God wants us to hate sin like I hate sand burrs.

Second, on the farm, we have tools to work with unwanted sand burrs. God also gives us tools to overcome sin. We find them in the Bible.

There you have it. Physical blessings and spiritual lessons are all part of God’s grace.

If you know Jesus, God has extended to you grace upon grace. Have you thanked Him? If not, start today. You will be glad you did.

(If you are having trouble with recognizing and thanking God for His grace upon grace, this article will help give you some ideas on how to change that.)

June 6 Prayer

Thank you, God, for your grace upon grace! We praise you for your abundant blessings. Help me to examine the tough parts in my life to see what blessings lay within them. Amen.
