Bible verse for June

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. Acts 6:8

Prayer Reflections for June 8

The Lord had asked me to start a prayer group at work. But I took a few months to get it done. I finally set up the inaugural meeting, and one person came. After talking through the guidelines for our group and a short devotional, the young man began to pray. In his prayer, he called me a ‘great Christian’ and prayed for my requests.

How could he call me ‘great’? Although delayed, I obeyed God’s request of me. I had not done anything spectacular. Despite how I saw the fleshly failures within me, he saw the Holy Spirit shining out through me.

Do others see the Holy Spirit in you?

There was a man in the New Testament that the Spirit was evident in his life and how others saw him.

After Jesus ascended into heaven, the church grew exponentially. Yet the daily distribution of food to widows was being neglected. The disciples didn’t want to give up preaching God’s Word, so they chose seven honorable men full of the Spirit and wisdom. One of the men they chose was Stephen, described as a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:1-7).

But Stephen didn’t stop at doing the food distribution; he did more.

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. Acts 6:8

His actions were grace-filled. In this context, charis, the Greek word for grace, means joy, delight, sweetness, and loveliness.

As Stephen spoke to the Jews about the law and how Jesus would release them from the burden of them. These men opposed the wise words he spoke and the Spirit that was speaking through him. They did not see the sweet Spirit of love that flowed out of Stephen, who wanted the people to know Jesus as he did and the freedom they’d find in Him.

In their opposition, these men wanted to hurt Stephen for saying these blasphemous words against God, Moses, the law, and their temple. They grabbed him and brought him before the council. Even with the opposition in front of him and facing potential death (see Chapter 7), Stephen’s face showed evidence of the Holy Spirit within him.

And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel. Acts 6:15.

Like Stephen, do others see the Holy Spirit shining out through you on your face?

Live each day full of grace and the power of the Spirit for others to see Him. You never know how the grace of the Spirit will flow out of your life and touch others.

June 8 Prayer

Spirit, help me to rely on your strength. May your power fill me with grace as I interact with others daily. May words of love, joy, and delight flow as I speak to others around me. May my countenance be evidence of You, Holy Spirit. Amen.
