Prayer Reflections for June 9

My name is Jessie, and I have about five memories of third grade.

Random, I know. Stick with me.

I could go into details about those memories, but they’re not core memories or anything exciting. They are just my memories of third grade. 

I spent 10 months of the year at school that year, and remember 5 things. 

When we are living in the present, we think about each day and remember all the things that happened in each day. But as life goes on, we remember a lot less about the day-to-day details. Our brain somehow chooses what to remember, what to forget, and what to store in the back of our head as a memory just to come up at random moments. That is why I can give you a lot of details of what happened yesterday, but not what happened exactly a year ago today. 

I say this as a reminder: certain parts of our lives that seem huge at that moment will someday disappear. As James 4:14 says, life is but a vapor.

Does that mean we shouldn’t care about the day-to-day? Certainly not! But it does mean that what God thinks is big for our lives is different than what we think may be big in our lives. 

Acts 20:24 says:

“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” 

Whenever life seems too hard to manage, or you wonder if you are making an impact in the world, keep this verse close to your heart. Remember that life really boils down to loving your neighbor and testifying the good news of God’s grace.
