Bible verse for May 1

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,a] for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 ESV)

Prayer Reflections for May 1

As I slid down from the driver’s seat and walked around to look at the damage to my pickup, I was pretty unhappy. This was going to cost a bunch to fix.

Then I thought to myself, “Do I really believe that God is good and that He can turn this into good?”

I would just have to believe that Romans 8:28 means exactly what it says.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” ESV

There it was in black and white. “ALL THINGS.” Even this big dent in the door and fender of my truck.

Now being human, I want to know right away what good will come from “all things” that I don’t like or that hurt me. But God’s timing is not our timing.

After all, it took years before I saw the good that came from the two unwanted divorces that I went through. Years.

And what was happening during those years? I was learning to trust God. He was teaching me

  • how to forgive
  • how to be grateful for all that I still had
  • how to empathize with other women who lost their spouses through divorce or death.

32 years after the first divorce, and 10 years after the second divorce I am seeing the goodness of God in those painful parts of my life.

He is allowing what I write to bring glory to Himself and at the same time help women going through similar circumstances.

When I believe Romans 8:28, I can pray that Scripture back to God. It is a powerful experience.

“Lord, I don’t understand why my pickup is damaged. But I know from other parts of Scripture that you always keep your promises. And so even though I can’t imagine what you will do with this mess, I choose to thank you, believing that you will make something good from it.”

Take heart, my friend. If you love God, whatever you are going through no matter how hard it is, God will use for good because He is good.

May 1 Prayer

Dear Lord, It is easy for us to say that all things will work together for your good. But it is during the unexpected times and the hard times that we get to live it out. Please help me live a Romans 8:28 lifestyle, resting in faith that all things come together to glorify You. Amen.
