Bible verse for May 14
“His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” 2 Peter 1:3 (NRSVA)
Prayer Reflections for May 14
It often amuses me when I walk around the supermarket and see the meal ‘kits’ that are on the shelves. There are kits to help you make tortillas, enchiladas, tacos and burritos – and this is just in the Mexican food section. The thing that makes me smile, as well as shake my head, is the fact that because it is called a ‘kit’ I expect it to contain everything I would need to make the meal. But this is not so. A closer look at the packaging and it informs me that it contains some of the elements needed for the meal, but I would still have to provide the meat, the lettuce, the tomato and the cheese! So not really that all-in-one meal kit I thought it was going to be.
Today’s Bible verse is taken from the start of Peter’s second letter to some gentile Christians he knew. He wrote this letter to encourage them in their faith as well as to warn them against some false teaching that was pervading their community.
The letter begins with some greetings and then Peter encourages his fellow Christians. He tells them that God has given them everything they need to become spiritually mature in Christ, and he has done this through our knowledge and relationship with Jesus. He goes on to say that because they have been given everything they need for spiritual maturity, they must actively chase after it if they hope to receive a reward in God’s eternal kingdom.
And the same is true for us. We also have no excuse for not pursuing maturity in Christ, because God has already given us everything we need to do it.
It is because of God’s goodness that he has given us everything we need to live our lives for him. He has not given us a ‘how-to-live-for-God’ meal kit that does not contain all the ingredients needed. He has given us everything we possibly need to live our lives successfully for him. He has given us ‘His divine power’ the Holy Spirit who enables and empowers us to live for him. He has given us his son, Jesus, who died for us to pay the price for our sin to restore us to a right relationship with God. He has given us the resurrection which proves that Jesus was God’s son and that everything he said and taught us about God is true and that we should follow and listen to him. It also means that we can have a vibrant and living relationship with the living Jesus right now. He has given us his word, the Bible, to teach, guide and strengthen us as we live our lives for him.
So, the next time you eat a burrito or an enchilada, remember God’s goodness to you. He doesn’t short-change us. He has given us everything we need for life and godliness.
May 14 Prayer
God, thank you for your goodness to me. Thank you that you have given me everything I need to live my life for you. Help me to depend upon you rather than upon myself. I need your strength, your guidance and your help.
Amen.
