“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” (Genesis 1:31)

Prayer Reflections for May 7

Like so many of our favorite scriptures, this verse is so rich.

Yet I wonder how often we may overlook its simple power. The gift of seeing and saying what is good.

To summarize the creation story found in Genesis 1:1-26, our triune God (our Heavenly Father, His son Jesus and His Holy Spirit) has just created so much beauty!

He created heaven & earth, spoke light & illuminated the darkness. He separated the water from dry land, where seed-bearing plants would begin to take root. He created the stars, sun & moon.

He spoke life, lots of it! Animals, fish, birds – all of them designed to multiply their own kind.

All of these things, the Lord “saw and it was good.” Then He made man in His own Image!

Genesis 1:27 tells us “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

The Lord blessed us, commanded us to be fruitful & multiply, fill the earth & subdue it, to have dominion over every living thing that moves on the earth. It is in this beautiful context that we find: God saw everything that He had made and indeed it was very good! How specific and creative is the Lord? It is worthy to acknowledge the gift of both male and female, having been created in the image of God!

I love to find Him in the nuances, in the details of my life. Since I am created in His image, fearfully & wonderfully made (Genesis 1:27, Psalm 139:14), I can trust that I am designed to see and appreciate what is good. Not that all of our life circumstances are good, but that we can look to Him amidst it all. He is a Good Father.

When was the last time you paused to see the things in your life to see how good they were? To see the beautiful things that He has created for you to experience, to enjoy and steward well? To see the men & women in your life with a renewed appreciation for their life? Day and night, we can and perhaps we really should do this.

When we do what the Lord did as His image-bearer, it brings Him glory and it truly blesses our own perspective.

May 7 Prayer

Thank you Father for the rich fabric that You’ve woven together in my life. Thank you for everything good & please help me to see things as You do. I ask You for clarity in what to release into Your Hands, I know that Your yoke is easy & Your burden is light (Matthew 11:29-30). Thank you for being a Good Father, help me to see You in the details & to hear Your Holy Spirit whisper to me in the nuances of my day. We seek to praise, honor, and glorify You, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
