God wants all of his children to live a life of freedom in Him. And that includes those struggling or challenged with a restless mind. He wants to set our mind free through His Word and prayer for the restless mind.

Because the bottom line, as Joyce Meyer puts it in her best-selling book, Battlefield of the Mind, “You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.”

So, have you ever felt like your mind was going a million miles per hour. With thoughts continuously just running through your mind?

Or have you ever felt as if it was hard to just quiet your mind? Or hard to quiet your thoughts?

I know that I have.

I have gone to bed plenty of nights and have awaken many times in the morning with a restless mind. With a myriad of thoughts.

Thoughts about that day. Thoughts about the days ahead. Thoughts about the kids, my husband, homeschooling, dinner, ministry, working out, business, etc.

And the list goes on, right?

Well friends, God does not want us to live this way. He does not want us to live with a restless mind.

To be restless according to Oxford dictionary, is to be unable to rest or relax as a result of anxiety or boredom. Or offering no physical or emotional rest; involving constant activity or motion.

It’s the Energizer Bunny syndrome, the mind ‘it keeps going and going’.

But God has a resolution including prayer for the restless mind.

God’s Word gives us confidence in Isaiah 26:3 (KJV). Which says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

One cause for a restless mind is overthinking. And another cause is simply when we try to figure things out on our own.

Combating a Restless Mind

There are several effective ways to combat a restless mind. We will explore 4 ways here. Including renewing our minds, leaning on God for understanding, meditation in God’s Word and ending with prayer for the restless mind.

Renewing our minds

With so many things vying for our attention these days, it is imperative for us to renew our minds. As well as guarding our minds. Gravitating more to the Word of God than the news or our social media feeds.

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; Ephesians 4:23 (KJV)

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2  (KJV)

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 (KJV)

Leaning on God for understanding

We often try to figure out things on our own instead of relying on God for understanding. Trusting God is one key to calming a restless mind. And we can trust him by giving over things that are concerning us to him.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:7-9 (KJV)

Meditation in God’s Word

Meditation in God’s Word is a great practice. And so easy to do. The gist of meditation in God’s Word is taking a verse and repeating it over and over again in your mind or out loud. Replacing wrong thoughts and wrong thinking with God’s Word is an effective way to combat a restless mind.

“but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.” Psalm 1:2

The bible clues us in on the importance of meditation when it says in Psalm 1:3, And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

And I believe this not only applies to our life, in general, but it includes our minds.

Like, how God leads us beside the still waters. He wants us to abide in His peace.

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.” Psalm 23:2-3 (NKJV)

There is a calmness to reading God’s Word. It brings peace into our life, into our homes, into our bodies, and into our minds.

Prayer For the Restless Mind

The Bible says that we should pray about everything.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

So here is a prayer that you can pray for a restless mind.

Lord, I know that you know me because I was created by you and for you.

You know all of my thoughts. You know when I lie down and when I rise. You know my comings and my goings.

And you know when my mind is restless.

Help me to keep my mind centered and focused on you. Help my thoughts be your thoughts and my ways your ways. Help me to keep my mind on those things which are lovely, good, wholesome and of a good report.

Help me not to overthink or to get ahead of myself but to keep my thoughts in alignment with your Word.

Help me to keep my mind focused on your purpose and your will to be accomplished for each today.

Help me when all the rushing thoughts come, to think on you. And to think on your word as calming waters flowing to my mind.

Help me to meditate on your Word and truths found in the Bible.

Help me to trust you in all that I do and truly lean on you for understanding.

Thank you Lord for calming my restless mind.

In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Great post Natasha! When I have a restless mind, I pray through the alphabet of the last names of all my friends. Works every time! Sometimes I ask God who I should pray for and He brings them to mind.
