Bible verse for August 1

They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.” (Genesis 26:28-29 NIV)

August 1 Prayer Reflection

Ever feel like God called you to something, but then things didn’t go as planned?

That’s where Genesis 26 begins.

So Isaac, son of Abraham, is in the land God promised him. And there is a famine.

Yep. No food in the land that God promised.

Pretty rough right? God promises that this is the land for Isaac, and then allows a famine to happen.

So Isaac starts to do what anyone would do, leave the land. But then God stops him and tells him not to leave.

I don’t know about you, but I’d be a bit confused and frustrated about God’s plan by that point.

But then God did something- He blessed the land. He blessed it so crops kept popping up for Isaac and his people. It made the neighboring people jealous. God comes back to him with the same promise he promised Abraham:

“That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.” Genesis 26:24

The leader of the neighboring area came back to him, and that’s where we get to the Bible verse of the day.

People around Isaac saw that God was with Isaac. People witnessing God’s goodness drew them to wanting peace.

God’s love is peaceful. Even when his plan doesn’t make sense, and we don’t know where he is leading, we know it will lead to peace.

But it gets better! Not only does it lead to peace for us, but peace can be passed to others as well.

How can you show God’s overwhelming peace today?

August 1 Prayer

Dear Lord, I know that when I seek You, You bring peace that is beyond understanding. Help me to live boldly in that peace today. Amen!
