Should Sunday Morning Prayers Be Different?

Before we get started, let’s answer one thing. Should Sunday morning prayers be different than all of our prayers the rest of the week?

The answer is yes and no. Technically, almost all prayers should be different. Prayer should be a conversational dialogue (talking AND listening!) between us and God, and conversations are rarely the same.

However, there is beauty in finding prayer examples and praying them to God. It allows us to steady our minds and prepare ourselves for our time with Jesus.

Also, if you are a churchgoer, reading or creating a Sunday morning prayer is a great way to prepare yourself for service. Just as I pray to God before I open His word, I love to pray before church. Asking God to open my heart, and speak to me the way He wants to speak to me allows me not to interpret the sermon based on my own emotions or what is going on that morning before church.

A Prayer of Focus

Dear Lord,

Thank you for this beautiful Sunday morning. I come to you in prayer this morning, asking for the type of focus that only you can provide in this busy world. Help me to focus on the greatness of you and the life you have planned for me. Help me take any distractions and realize they are trivial earthly struggles in comparison to the joy you will bring that is everlasting. Instead of me trying to remove the distractions, help me embrace the distractions and keep the focus always pointing to you. Amen.

Prayer of Patience

You know my heart in and out, and you know that my heart is tired, but it is not fully resting in you. My patience wears thin with the weight of the world. For this Sunday morning, please free me of any burden of impatience I may have for what is going on in life around me. Help me to have patience like you Lord, and help me to replace any impatience with empathy like Jesus. Amen.

Prayer For Church

I come to you today with lots on my mind and a busy life stealing my focus. I ask that you help me still my mind for honoring you at church. Help me open my eyes to what you want me to see and hear instead of me going for my own agenda. Help me be Jesus’ hands and feet in a world that needs you now more than ever, Amen.

Prayer for the World on Sunday Morning

Dear Lord,

This world is definitely a world that needs more Jesus. This Sunday morning, I come to you to pray for the world. To pray for the ones I love, the ones I despise, and the ones I don’t know. I pray for the ones that don’t know you and ask that in your name they come to find you through Christians being your hands and feet. In what can seem like a dark world, help me not only find your light, but to be the light for others to see you through me, Amen.

How To Create Your Own Sunday Morning Prayer

It is a lot easier than you think to create your own Sunday morning prayers. If you pray according to the Bible, you have nothing to lose!

To create your own prayer for Sunday morning, start with what you believe your biggest obstacles of Sunday mornings are.

Is it running around like crazy getting your kids ready for church?

Is it not being able to get out of bed after a hectic week?

Or maybe it is getting distracted while praying.

Whatever your biggest obstacles are, identify them, embrace them, and then turn them into prayers. Click to Tweet

Whatever you find your problems to be, you can use this to create your own prayer for Sunday morning.

I recommend writing them down in a prayer journal to keep track of them. As your Sunday mornings change, your prayers may change also!

Feel like you need a prayer strategy? Here are 3 simple secrets to creating your own prayer strategy, whether it’s for Sunday morning prayers or prayers for anytime during the week!

To create your own Sunday prayer:

1. Think of anything that may get in the way physically, emotionally, or mentally from you being at or being 100% present in Sunday service.

2. Find a Bible verse that matches the emotion you are feeling.

3. Turn that Bible verse into a prayer!

Here is an example.

Dear Heavenly Father, there are people all around the world that cannot go to church services today due to much bigger problems than I have. Please be with anyone in that situation and remind them of the power of Jesus’ name. Help them find you wherever they are currently and to feel your mighty presence. Help them feel your overwhelming peace. And most of us, help us all remember that you gave us not a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7.) Amen!

Bible Verses To Go With Your Prayer For Sunday Morning

Sometimes, we need the reminder to slow down. Especially in this crazy busy life. Whether you observe the Sabbath or not, remembering that God called us to rest is a great way to slow down the day and remember  all that God has done for us.

Keeping the day Holy and reserved for God can really reset your prayer life with Him. I try my best to remember the holiness of the day when praying a Sunday morning prayer.

“I am the Lord your God; follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Keep my Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.” (Ezekiel 20:19-20)

Sometimes, it is mind-blowing in itself that God actually rested.

That was one of my biggest questions when I was a kid in Sunday School. God can do literally anything and everything, why did He stop to rest? We know from Isaiah 40:28 that God doesn’t need to rest. For God, rest had not one thing to do with being tired. Instead, God stopped creating. We too need to rest so we can mirror God.

“Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” (Genesis 2:3)

If we take time to rest on Sunday though, as God has shown us to do, we want to make sure we do it for the right reasons. We want to make sure we honor and glorify God in it, and that we make sure we stay away from boosting ourselves up in the process.

“Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.” (Colossians 2:16-17 )

For Sunday morning prayers, it is about rest, but it also about starting your day with God. I try to make sure I start off fresh with honoring God and letting Him choose what He wants to do for the day through me.

“Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.” (Psalm 143:8)
