Is Fall Mentioned in the Bible?
Many times we are looking for a picture-perfect image of red and orange leaves carpeting a path with an inspirational fall Bible verse in front of it. So the question is: is fall even mentioned in the Bible?
The amount of times that fall is mentioned in the Bible actually depends on what translations of the Bible you use.
(Note: this is not to start a debate about Bible translations, nor will I be giving my opinion on the matter. This is just factual answers about fall Bible verses.)
In some translations, such as the King James Version of the Bible or the New King James version of the Bible, the actual word “autumn” is only used once:
“These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots;” (Jude 1:12)
This verse comes from the book of Jude, that is only one chapter in length with 25 verses.
The beautiful thing about the book of Jude is that Jude is known as the half-brother of Jesus, who did not put his trust and faith in Jesus until after his resurrection. His entire contribution to the Bible is about standing up for what is right and exposing false teachers.
This one Bible verse is a great verse for fall because it is a place of maturity in the Christian faith where we can notice what infiltrates our view of God and how to stand against it.
In other translations, there are many more times that the word autumn is mentioned (keep reading, they are listed below!)
What else does the Bible Say about Fall?
Israel has two seasons, summer May-September which is dry and hot and winter which is October to April.
Throughout scripture, we read about harvest time as well as the rains. Again, the version in which you read will say it a bit differently. Some translations say former and latter rains while others say autumn and spring rains.
Both mean the same and with Israel being an agricultural society, we can see that God used rain to bless them or punish them.
Yes, the season of fall does have to do with the harvest season. With harvest though comes growth and maturity. Because of that, Bible verses about maturity make great fall scriptures too.
Others equate fall with prosperity, wealth, and abundance, making these topics great fall Bible verses as well
“So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul—Then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. “ Deuteronomy 11:14
- they were used to a dry season and a wet season. God said he would send rain to them no matter the season.
- If we love God and serve him how he asks, his love and mercies will be with us in every season, renewing us.
“As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.” Psalm 84:6
“They do not say to themselves, ‘Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’ Jeremiah 5:24
Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. Joel 2:23
Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. James 5:7
These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. Jude 1:12
More Bible Verses about Fall
Depending on your climate, fall often means harvest time and the land of Israel was dependent on a good harvest to sustain them. Like the rain, a good harvest was a time to thank God as they believed He supplied that harvest (as an enthusiastic gardener, I whole heartedly agree!)
These Bible verses about fall tell of both a physical harvest as well as a spiritual harvest. Both are needed, but of course, only one leads to eternal life.
If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land. Leviticus 26:3-5
The Lord will indeed give what is good and our land will yield its harvest. Psalm 85:12
Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you. Hosea 10:12
He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Luke 10:2
Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. John 4:35-36
What is your role in harvesting for the Lord? Are you being a light in the darkness, a beacon of truth? Perhaps you are nurturing young souls, guiding them away from this sinful world and onto the path less taken.
Rejoice in your position, God’s grace will be known because of you.
Want to be bold this fall? Let others ask you for prayer! On the front of the shirt, it says “Ephesians 6:18” and on the back, it says “Stop me and I’ll pray for you.” Imagine the prayer that can happen with our signature shirt!
Bible Verses about Maturity
Fall is often associated with nearing the end of one’s life, a physical and spiritual maturity. These Bible verses about the fall season should included Bible verses about maturity, especially as we are trying to identify how the season applies to our personal faith journeys.
So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:11-15
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3
And with this last verse, we have come full circle. Remember the verse in Jude near the beginning of this article? Spiritual maturity comes with identifying and standing against false teachings.
Paul has a lot to say about this as well, admonishing the believers to whom the book of Hebrews is written. Sometimes we are satisfied with milk and not willing to make the sacrifices required to eat the true meat of the word of God. We prefer to take the easy way, enjoying the idea of grace and salvation but not acting upon it.
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:11-14
Bible Verses About Abundance
Ok, we are down to our last section of Bible verses about fall. Let’s briefly include a few Bible verses about abundance.
Let’s begin with the beloved Psalm 23.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.
We often focus on the comforting aspects of this psalm while journeying a difficult path in life, but David speaks of abundance here.
“I lack nothing” “green pastures” “my cup overflows”
David knew God as not only one who provided for him in all areas of his life (physical, emotional, and spiritual) but one who did so with abundance!
He passes this teaching onto his son, Solomon.
“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go” 1 Kings 2:2-3
And just like the verses about harvests and rain, God promised that the children of Israel would prosper if they followed Him.
Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do. Deuteronomy 29:9
