“How can I pray after this happened to me?”
“How do you have so much faith that when something horrific happens you can continue to pray?”
When a major life challenge happens where do you turn? Many people blame God for their troubles. I have never done that. God is the only way through traumatic events in our lives.
The power of faith and trust in God will help you overcome, every single time. Let me share my story with you.
The Major Life Challenge That Taught Me About the Power of Faith in God
My name is Wendy. In 2011, I contracted something that I thought was the flu. However, it turned out to be something far more menacing. My supposed flu turned out to be something called necrotizing fasciitis or flesh-eating bacteria.
Within hours after my diagnosis, I was life-flighted to a medical teaching hospital who could better care for me. For the next three weeks, I was in a medically induced coma while they cut pieces of my body away that contained this bacteria.
Surgery after surgery until they were sure they got all the bad cells. However, during that time, sepsis set in and my body started shutting down.
My kidneys were failing and the blood flow to my hands and feet stopped. When they woke me up to tell me they needed to amputate, I remember looking at my hands and they were black and dead.
I asked them to save my life. Back into the coma I went. When I next awoke I was a quadruple amputee.
My first memory from after that was my prayer to God. I needed to keep my faith in God. Truly, I don’t understand how anyone can undergo a major life event without leaning on the Lord and the power of faith.
If it’s not God, then who comforts you during such a time as that? Who heals you? Surely you can’t summon something deep inside to do all that on your own? It’s not possible! Keep faith in God!
The Power of Faith Through Slim Chances
Let me paint the picture of what was happening behind the scenes. The expert doctors told my husband and three teenagers at the time, that I had a slim-to-none chance of survival.
But we are a family of faith. My husband and kids refused that prognosis and they had a line of communication started with the greatest healer of all, our Heavenly Father.
Our church family rallied around me. They notified my friends and family from across the country who spread the word that I needed prayers. Hundreds of people, some who had never met me started praying.
My family never lost their faith. It wasn’t long before my eyes opened and I was out of the woods. That is the power of faith and prayer, my friend!
Pray With Confidence is not just a website. It’s the only way to communicate with God, through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Remember what James tells us in James 1:6-8 KJV “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

How do you have so much faith?
Here’s the question presented to me, when asked to tell my story. How do you have so much faith that when something horrific happens you can continue to pray?
My answer to that question is, how can you not keep faith in God? Think about who God is, what He’s created, the promises that He has made, and the power that He has.
Do you have any reason to believe that He cannot answer our prayers? There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that He is able. The bigger question is, will He?
Sometimes I hear the question, why does God allow suffering? Yes, God allows hard times to fall on us. Go back to the story of Joseph. In the very last chapter of Genesis, Joseph is talking to his brothers.
Their father Jacob, had just died and Joseph’s brothers were unprotected and scared of what they did to Joseph, by selling him into slavery. But God had a plan all along. Joseph knew that and by the power of his faith, he obeyed God with every difficult challenge he faced.
Genesis 50:19-20 KJV “And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”
The Blessings in the Hardships
God doesn’t cause evil to fall upon us, but God does allow suffering and bad things to happen. So many blessings are there in the midst of our trials.
Hardships are there for a purpose. Our suffering and our struggles happen to nurture and refine us spiritually and in all things God will be glorified.
Roman’s 8:28 KJV “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Through my recovery and spiritual growth, I’ve been given an opportunity to share Jesus with so many people. Every time someone tells me what an inspiration I am to them, my reply is always, “it’s all by the grace of God.”
You see only through answered prayers, the power of faith and God’s healing could I be alive and truly thriving like I am today.
James 1:2-4 KJV “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
Trials Are Like a Refiner’s Fire
So why does God allow suffering? Trials are like a refiner’s fire which melts down the silver or gold and removes the impurities and leaves a perfect piece of metal.
What my illness did for me, was force me to put all my faith in God. I couldn’t heal myself, but He could. As I was learning to walk again with prosthetics, it was only through His guidance that I succeeded.
And that is just one of many examples of what leaning on the Lord can do.
The Power of Faith in God
My faith has grown immensely. I have learned to trust the Lord in everything. But the really cool thing is that it’s not just me who has grown spiritually.
The doctors who said I had no chance saw faith at work in my husband, kids and those who prayed with them at the hospital. The hundreds of people who prayed saw those prayers answered.
This is why we keep faith in God. That is what the power of faith does.
Remember how thankful and how in awe you feel when a prayer has been answered. Well multiply that exponentially. That, my friend is the power of God.
Yes, God is sovereign over everything as it says in Romans 11:36 KJV “For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”
But it doesn’t mean that He rules over good and evil in the same way. He is a wonderful giver of all things good, but evil never comes from God.
James 1:17 KJV “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
James 1:13 KJV “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:”
How do we get the hope in the Lord?
But we have hope, don’t we? Jesus came to be the payment for those sins. His blood covered the debt we owe. And now, those who accept His free gift of salvation can live forever with Him in Heaven.
Roman’s 6:23 KJV “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Friend, if you haven’t yet asked the Lord, Jesus into your heart to save your soul, there’s a few things you should know.
Who is good?
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” Roman’s 3:10. KJV
Who has sinned?
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Roman’s 3:23 KJV
Where did sin come from?
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Romans 5:12 KJV
Our Way Out
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Roman’s 5:8 KJV
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Roman’s 10:13 KJV
Keep faith in God, never wavering
If you want the power of faith in God that I have. If you want to keep faith in God, the faith that enables me to answer this question…”How do you have so much faith that when something horrific happens you can continue to pray?” You need a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Put your faith in Him, never wavering. And He will get you through any circumstance the devil wants to throw at you. I’m not promising that it will be easy, but you will grow closer to Him in the process.
