One thing to note before we start praying against evil

When I grew up, I often saw cartoons or movies with the idea of the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other shoulder.

Sometimes, we accidentally grow up with the idea that God and the enemy are equal.

Of course, if someone asked us point blank if we thought God and satan were equal we would say, “of course not!”. 

However, when we feel spiritual warfare, sometimes we still subconsciously think of it as God v. satan.

In reality, there is no comparison.

The enemy thought he had a good fight in heaven, but in an instant, God won that battle and kicked satan out of heaven.

In summary, satan is very real and active and alive in trying to thwart the mission God gave us. But we don’t want to make anything in this post sound like we are giving the enemy too much credit here, because what the enemy could spend years trying to do God can do for us in an instant.

One of the best prayers against evil

One of the absolute best prayers against evil is a spiritual warfare prayer many of us turn to: Psalm 91.

One of the reasons that we often refer to Psalm 91 as a prayer against evil is because it is one of many psalms that involve the military. The psalmist is most likely a priest speaking to an army before battle, according to Longman’s interpretation of the Psalms.

My go-to for Psalm interpretations to help me dig into the Book of Psalms.

This type of psalm is a psalm of confidence. The psalmist has confidence that if we have a real relationship with God no harm will come our way. 

There are many metaphors about protection in this Psalm, which leads us to use this as a prayer against evil. 

Ironically, the enemy quoted this psalm when tempting Jesus (Matthew 4:6, he uses Psalm 91:11-12.)

Satan tries to have Jesus throw himself off the highest point of the temple because angels would tempt him, and Jesus says not to put God to the test. 

Satan used truth (this psalm) for evil. This is a reminder that we really need God’s truth as protection so we can overcome any evil thrown at us.

Another great prayer/Bible verse when trying to thwart the evil plan of the enemy is to pray Ephesians 6:10-11. This passage talks about the armor of God. It walks through how to put on the full armor to avoid the enemy’s schemes and plots. 

If I’m going to pray spiritual warfare prayers, I have to know…what is “evil?”

Evil is defined as the “exact opposite of what is good or right.” 

Evil starts as soon as the beginning of Genesis with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Once Eve ate fruit from the tree, she had the knowledge that there was even an opposite of good.

In her life, everything she knew before that was only “good.”

Most often though, when we are talking about evil in a spiritual sense, we are talking about the activities of Satan and his demons. They are real, active, and alive on earth today.
